What is your favorite scent?
Submitted by Erinen.
I think I will be doing a slightly odd answer to this one. Willow and I have talked often about scents, and how they're not targeted at your average male. If they were, you may see the following scents in... well, whatever store you buy stuff like that in.
- "meat" -- the smell of barbecued meat
- "smoke" -- campfire in a bottle
- "deep fry" -- enough said
There have been more, but I can't think of any right now. You get the idea.
Let's make a list. What are 20 things in your life that you're grateful for?
Inspired by wyndslash.vox.com.
(in no particular order)
- Let's just start it off with this kid (see right) and his mom (also right)
- A stable job with work that I enjoy most of the time
- Family that I like to spend time with
- Family that my wife likes to spend time with
- In-laws that I enjoy hanging out with
- TiVo
- Fresca
- Kate Winslet and Rachel Weisz (heh)
- A nice home that is (being) paid for
- Blustery days with nothing better to do than watch the wind with a good book and a cup of strong coffee
What TV show(s) will you be watching this season? Why?
Submitted by ducnly.vox.com.
Our "Season Pass" list is too long, and actually just got pruned last night (see "notably missing" below). Why? Too many shows, and the less-watched or less-interesting ones just don't get to make the cut.
New shows this season:
- Justice -- "Jack Bristow" can't kill anyone in this one, but he may still have to watch his back.
- Standoff -- yeah, I'm gonna need you to come in on Saturday and negotiate with a hostage-taker...
- Psych -- on USA, part of a great lineup.
- Eureka -- on SciFi, a fun little show about the US's geniuses.
- Dancing with the Stars -- Willow likes this show, but then she knows who the 'stars' all are because she reads trash like "People" and "Entertainment Weekly". ;)
- American Idol -- it's not on right now, but you know it will be, and you know we'll watch it.
- CSI (Las Vegas) -- still good.
- CSI: New York -- last season got better, so we'll give this one a few more episodes and see what happens.
- The Unit -- this is a great show, and you should check it out.
- House -- Sarcasm and a mystery. Excellent. The only "hospital" show we've ever watched.
- Bones -- Mmmm. This is closer to the way CSI used to be, with a bit more personality thrown in. Think CSI (Las Vegas) crossed with the good character interactions of Mulder and Scully in (heyday) X-Files.
- Stargate SG-1 -- if you're not watching this (and you like sci-fi) you're missing out. Too bad we're down to the last half-season.
- Stargate Atlantis -- this is getting good. The first season wasn't really great, but with the addition of Ronin in the recent past, the show has taken off, IMO. This is akin to Star Trek: DS9's trouble and solution when Worf joined the cast (and Sisko cut his hair to re-emerge as Hawk from Spencer for Hire, but In Space).
- Numb3rs -- haven't watched the premiere yet, but it has been nothing but good for two years; can't see why it would be any different this year.
- Battlestar Galactica -- see SG-1 above: if you're not watching this (and you like sci-fi), what is wrong with you? Old-school adherents aside, this is some of the best sci-fi television ever, IMO.
- CSI Miami -- sorry, I just don't care about the whole Horatio/Delco vendetta, and if I'm gonna have to focus on just one or two characters for most of the show, it would certainly not be them. This show has gotten too 'soap' for us.
What's your favorite way to keep in touch? Phone, snail mail, email, text message, Vox, _____ ?
I'm not sure there's really a choice -- email, all the way. At least for interactive communications. It will come as no surprise to any of you that know me that I'm no big fan of phones. Hate 'em, in fact. It's all so... immediate.
Maybe I'll break it down like this:
Real-Time Interactive: Instant Messaging (AIM, Jabber, etc.) Yeah, you could call this "immediate" as well, but you'd be wrong. You are having a 'real-time' conversation, but you can still pause to think or whatever.
Just Interactive: Email. Give me your question, I'll find whatever information I need to answer it, and get back to you. Or just say "hi" and we can go from there.
Broadcast: Blog (currently this one, on Vox). This beats the "yearly newsletter" hands down for talking to family and friends, because it is (or can be) short-form, it doesn't require postage (how very analog!) and, most of all, it happens more than once a year. I also include in this the Flickr photostream.
But wait! You're dodging the real question. Does "keeping in touch" not include face-to-face?
Face-to-Face: I've now got a video camera built-in to the laptop, so if you want to video chat with me, feel free. I'm on AIM, and if you can see my AIM ID on the sidebar there, chat me up!
Who's your favorite movie villain?
Alan Rickman. In any role. My personal favorite is the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood. He is a bad-guy genius surrounded by idiots. Followed up in Quigley Down Under. Basically the same role, but not quite as humorous. Then, of course, there is Die Hard. What possible villian could be a bigger genius surrounded by bigger incompetents? OK, not so much, but that has got to be one of his best parts in the villian role.
If you had a band, what would you call yourselves?
Question submitted by Zoot
My friend Jason had a band called "Poop Box" for a few hours -- then they were forced to change the name because they couldn't perform at school with that name. They changed it to "Ruby Stew". It was fun stuff, but until I started writing this, I had forgotten that Jason played an instrument. I should find out if he still does, eh?
I know I have now not answered both QotD's that I've posted, but this is more fun, right?
Who is your favorite Muppet? Why?
QotD submitted by knitwitology.vox.com.
I think I'm centered more on what my favorite sketches are, rather than the muppets in particular. Probably my favorite sketch is the "Opposites" lesson from Sesame Street. There's a critter with the flyaway hair that is doing a little dance to a groovy beat. "Near... Far... Opposite... Opposite..." Love it.
My favorite non-Henson Muppet-like creature would probably be Tardy the Turtle from "Greg the Bunny". Some of the best non sequiturs ever, like "crayons taste like purple!" and "drumsticks can also be chicken!"
Fun.
