Nuclear power generation, that is. Look, I am not trying to say that I'm in any way responsible, but I've been saying since high school that nuclear power makes more sense than burning coal, or anything else, for that matter. Yes there is waste, but it is concentrated and you know where it is and can deal with it.
A while back, Wired ran a
story about China's "pebble-bed" reactors, which are basically meltdown-free. Now this article on O'Reilly's "Radar" blog offers up more information about how nuclear power can offer a better way to generate power into the future.
An interesting post today from Tim O'Reilly today, in which he talks about an interview with Stewart Brand. I don't really know much about Brand, but after reading his Wikipedia entry, I recognize a lot of the Tech stuff he's been involved with, and I guess he's a highly respected Environmentalist, and a sometime Enviro-whacko.
Anyhow, what struck me about the article is that he is now being called the "Heretical Environmentalist" because of his current opinion about genetic engineering and nuclear power.
I am one of those people who think that properly-implemented nuclear power would be A Very Good Thing. I have been saying that for years, and with an article in Wired a few years ago about what the Chinese are doing with "pebble-bed" reactors, my opinion hasn't changed any.
The interesting part is that his argument is mine (or mine is his, whatever): with nuclear, you at least know where your waste is, and can deal with it appropriately. With coal or oil burning, you are releasing the waste into the air with all of the consequences that go along with it.
